My name is Shannon Wright. I’m 23 years old and a native of Chester, SC. My first connection with the YMCA was the age of 6. My Mom would come to the YMCA every Tuesday and Thursday. I remember as a child hearing how wonderful the YMCA was, but didn’t really understand why it was so important to my family. My Dad was a regular at the YMCA. Everyone knew who he was. That made me very proud.
When I turned 10 years old, I asked my parents if I could attend the After-School Program. I remember at that age that I had many issues with my weight. I had very few friends in school. The Y was a place where that didn’t matter anymore. To this day, I will never forget my counselor. His name was Kyle Coleman. He made me feel accepted at the YMCA. I struggled with Reading and Math, but the YMCA helped me through it. The YMCA helped shape me into the person I am today. I recently graduated from Johnson and Wales Culinary School of Arts. I wanted to give back to the YMCA of Chester County and now I am a counselor and very proud of it. My 5 year old is in the
After School and Summer Day Camp programs. I want her to feel the same way I felt no matter of her color, shape or size, she can just be her!
