Memo to Upper Palmetto YMCA Members Serving Chester, Lancaster and York Counties
The Upper Palmetto YMCA wants to update you on how we are adjusting to the Coronavirus situation. Last week, we cancelled all Y programs since many Y programs have large groups. Yesterday (Thursday) we received a recommendation from the YMCA of the USA for all YMCAs to close today. Our YMCA Board of Directors has made the difficult decision: All Upper Palmetto YMCAs in Chester, Lancaster and York Counties will close today (Friday) at 6 pm. The Upper Palmetto YMCA is following state and national recommendations for recreational and fitness facilities to be closed until May 1st, 2020.
These are tough times for all of us and the Y greatly appreciates your support. Our Y is a not for profit and the main source of our funding comes from your membership dues, program fees and donations. We do not get any government funding. Your member dues generate 60 % of our income and are the main source of our revenue. Your donations help provide Y services for those that cannot afford to pay – and meet community needs with affordable childcare and youth sports programs. The Upper Palmetto Y gives more than 3,000 local 4th graders free swim lessons each year!
We have reached out to local hospitals, city governments and school officials to offer our help during these difficult times. Our YMCAs in Fort Mill, Clover (CSD) and Chester are the site for distributing meals for school children while schools are closed. We are in contact with DSS concerning their possible need for childcare while their staff work through this crisis.
Today’s payroll was for 851 staff members – about 800 are part time and about 50 are full time. We hope to keep many working – and we plan to assist other staff with unemployment claims or finding other sources of income.
Thanks for your continued support!
